Public Speaking Hot Tips

Is the stage your plank or your springboard?
It's your choice. Here are some key things to practice as you continue to improve as effective and inspiring speakers.

The Entrance
Walk with alacrity and confidence while looking in the direction of the audience as you approach.

Planting Your Feet/ Stance
Come to the speaking spot and get a comfortable, firm stance.

Give 'Em A Smile - Expression
Put a welcoming expression on your face.

Breathe
Take a gentle and long breath in.

Eye Contact
Scan the audience and make brief eye contact with a few.

Volume
Your first words need to come out strongly and clearly. Aim for the back of the audience.

Pace
Speak as if your are in conversation with a friend and stay at a moderate pace.

Pause
Pause after few sentences and reconnect with your audience by making eye contact and breathing.

Using Your Hands
Keep your hands where they can be seen and use them to create a picture for your audience.

Moving Around The Stage
If you choose to move your feet, start with small steps in either direction to engage your audience. Move slowly and avoid pacing back and forth.

Making A Point
When you are about to make a point, pause, set your feet, take a breath and state it very clearly and slowly. If necessary, repeat it for effect.

A Strong Closing
End with a point, an acknowledgement or a great question.
