The brain is designed to learn. It will naturally
take in information and categorize it and put it to use. People
can work with or against the brain's natural style. Students
took some time to find out how the brain worked naturally.
Students imagined a TV screen in
their minds and turned to a blank channel. Then they heard the
word "Apple". A discussion of what happened on the screen
followed. From that discussion, students learned three things
about the way the brain works.
- The brain likes to start
from the center and move out
- The brain thinks in
pictures.
- The brain likes colors.
Using this information
about the brain the strategy of Visual Mapping was introduced.
This strategy can be used for organization, essays, taking notes
or studying. It applies what is known about how the brain
works. Students learned about the strategy by actually using
it. As it was taught students took notes using the strategy.
