Learning Points: The XY Game
Following the X and Y game, the group discussed four methods for improving
a leaders ability to enable cooperation.
Odds
As a leader, it is important that you are honest with your team. Never lie
to them about their chances of being successful. It's alright to let
people know that they are facing challenging odds or an uphill battle. The
more transparent your are about the odds, the more ownership each member
of your team will take for improving the likelihood for success.
Brightness Of The Future
Make sure that there is a very clear purpose for what you are doing. Be
able to convey that purpose to your team. If they find it to be
compelling, they will work hard with you to make it a reality. If the
future is bright, people will be excited to be a part of your vision.
Frequency Of Interaction
If you want people to stay on course and be supportive of your vision,
make sure that you interact with them frequently. Allow them to ask lots
of questions and make sure that they fully understand what's going on at
all times. If something changes, get everyone together and let them know.
Make And Keep Agreements
When you meet with your team, make agreements about what will happen next,
who is responsible for what and when things need to be done. Work hard to
keep these agreements. This will build trust and loyalty. If an agreement
gets broken, talk about it right away and make any necessary adjustments
as a team.
